Geometries of the Hyperbolic Plane
Independent Research Project M1R
My M1R project explores Hyperbolic Planes and its properties. I started of exploring the point of having a Hyperbolic Plane.
There are two models to represent the Hyperbolic Plane, the Upper Half Plane Model and the Hyperbolic Disc Model. I started with the primer to fail the 5th postulate, then I used it to derive the equation of Arc Length, behaviours of points near the boundaries of the model and finally derive the hyperbolic area equation and the generalised Gauss-Bonnet formula by starting with an “ideal triangle”.
This leads onto the concept of curvature and how it varies between the three geometries.
Then I explained the Hyperbolic Disc Model and its geodesics to fail the fifth postulate. Then Iused the disc model to derive the equation of circumference and area for Hyperbolic Planes.
The presentation part was really fun mainly because I preapred for it well (I knew the content) and also planned a few questions that they might ask. There was only two professors so no pressure and they were really nice and encouraging. I enjoyed the presentation a lot.
